Jonas Čepulis (on stamp Iones Chapulis) born 1935 in Lithuania – boxer, Olympic games silver medal winner. Champion of the Baltics in 1962. In 1963-1964, 1966-1967, 1969 and 1970 heavy weight Champion of Lithuania. 1965 and 1968 has won silver and 1966 bronze medal of USSR championship. At that time Lithuania was occupied by USSR, so every Lithuanian sportsman had to represent Soviet Union.
He’s a Vice-Champion of Mexico Olympic games in 1968, at the final fight lost to 10 years younger competitor George Foreman.

Gintautas Umaras (born 1963 in Lithuania) – cyclist, twice Olympic game winner.
In 1988 Seoul Olympics Gintautas Umaras became a champion in personal 4 km track race and one more gold medal has won together with another lithuanian Arturas Kasputis in a team race.
Gintautas Umaras is a only one Lithuanian sportsmen who have made the most world records (5) in the classical sport event.
At that time Lithuania was occupied by USSR, so every Lithuanian sportsman had to represent Soviet Union. That’s why we see Soviet flag on the stamp.

100 years of modern Olympic games. From Athens 1896 - to Atlanta 1996
Olympic Games are international competition of sport games of different branches. It takes place every four year. Olympic Games have started in Ancient Greece, and at the end the 19th century the games were renewed by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin. Revived Olympic Games are held every four years since 1896, except the years of the first and the Second World War
Summer Olympic Games number 27 were held in 1996 in Atlanta (USA). 10318 sportsmen from different countries participated in these games. There were 60 representatives from Lithuania.
Lithuanian basketball team showed the best, it was the third time alternately when it won Olympic bronze.

World championship in basketball - Athens 1998
Lithuania national team in 1998 World championship's group competition has won 4 out of 6 games. Lithuania has won vs Korea (97:56), USA (84:82)!!!, Brasil (66:62), Argentina (84:75), lost to Australia (61:71) and Spain (80:86). In quaterfinals Lithuania lost to Russia (67:82) and lost the game for 5-8th place to Italy (71:76) and for the second time won against Argentina (77:76). Lithuania took 7th place in championship.
Highest scorers in Lithuania team were A. Karnišovas (av. 17,11 points per game) and S. Štombergas (av. 13,33 points per game).

Dainius Zubrus -
born June 16, 1978 in Elektrėnai, Lithuania. He is a professional ice hockey right winger and center. Dainius Zubrus was drafted 15th overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers from the Caledon Canadians of the Metro Junior A Hockey League. As of the 2006 draft, Zubrus is the highest drafted Tier II Junior "A" player since the Canadian Junior A Hockey League's 1993 inception. Prior to being traded to Caledon, Zubrus played for the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Junior A Hockey League. He made his NHL debut on October 5, 1996, scoring a goal against the Florida Panthers. In his rookie season he helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup final.
The Flyers traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on March 10, 1999, with a pair of draft picks, for Mark Recchi. He registered his first career hat-trick on October 14, 2000, against the Chicago Blackhawks, and was traded by the Canadiens to the Washington Capitals along with Trevor Linden for Richard Zednik and Jan Bulis on March 13, 2001.
Because of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Zubrus decided to play abroad with Washington Capitals teammate Alexander Semin. He played 42 regular season games for HC Lada Togliatti, tallying 19 points on 8 goals and 11 assists. He also appeared in 10 playoff games while in the Russian Super League, scoring 3 goals and 1 assist.
On February 27, 2007, Zubrus was traded to the Buffalo Sabres along with Timo Helbling for Jiri Novotny and a first round draft pick.
On July 3, 2007, Zubrus signed a 6-year $20.4 million dollar deal with the New Jersey Devils. He earns $3.4 million a season.
Originally, Zubrus had suited up for the Russian national team during the World Cup of Hockey in 2004. But since then, he has played internationally for Lithuania, most notably in the 2005 World Championships. He had told the press that, "Lithuania needs me more than Russia." Because of the existence of the USSR, players born during its time as a nation were able to choose whether to play for Russia, or their own country after the breakup. He now plans to represent Lithuania in all of his future international hockey appearances.

Ţydrűnas Ilgauskas ( born 1975 in Kaunas, Lithuania) - - basketball player. His professional basketball player carrier started 1994 in Kaunas “Atletas” team. 1996 was called number 20 by Cleveland team to the NBA. Since 1997 member of Cleveland “Cavaliers” team until today. 1997-1998 was elected to the All star rookie team and was elected MVP. Participated in NBA All star games on 2003 and 2005. Candidate to Lithuania national basketball team.

Virgilijus Alekna is a famous Lithuanian athlete. He was born on February 13, 1972 in Terpeikiai, near Kupiškis, Lithuania. He won two gold medals in the Summer Olympics, both in the discus throw. The first was in the 2000 and the second in 2004. His personal record is 73.88 meters (242 ft 4½ in), surpassed only by the world record (74.08 m.). World champion in 2003 and 2005. European champion in 2006. Alekna was awarded the title of Athlete of the Year for 2000 by Track and Field News. He was also awarded Gediminas order by Lithuania government. Since 1995 has served as a body guard of the Lithuanian prime minister.
In 2007 he was appointed as UNESCO Champion for Sport.

In Summer Olympics Beijing 2008 he won the bronze medal at his fourth attempt of 67.79 m

From Lituania 23 sportsmans participated in tis championship. The best personal result performed Saulene Taruskaite. She took 15th place.
Lithuania team (S. Taruškaitė, V.Rizgelytė, J.Jonavičiūtė) in competition took only 11th place among 14 teams.

Vida Vencienė - born May 21, 1961 in Ukmergė, Lithuania. She's a former cross-country skier who represented the USSR and later Lithuania from 1988 to 1994. She won a gold medal over 10 km and a bronze over 5 km at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.
Her best finish at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships was 7th in the 30 km event in 1989. She also finished 2nd in a 10 km event in a World Cup event in Leningrad in 1988.

Saulius Štombergas (born December 14, 1973 in Klaipėda, is a retired Lithuanian basketball player for the Lithuanian men's national basketball team.

During the 11 years as a Lithuanian international he played 97 official games and scored 1036 points for his home country. He won two Bronze medals at the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000, a Silver medal at the European Championship in Athens and as a captain of the NT became champion of the same competition in 2003 in Sweden.
